TAIWANESE-STYLE CUSINE IN PECKHAM

Street food trader Mr Bao who before opened up a restaurant in Soho has brought the delights of Taiwanese to SE15.

Co-founders Frank Yeung and Nick Birkett have transformed a run-down space on Peckham Rye into an intimate and cool eatery. You know it is the latest hotspot when you have to put your name down in a black book to get a table.

It has a contemporary style decor with white washed walls, wooden table tops and exposed bulbs - you know vibe. The space is pretty cosy with shared tables and countertop dining, creating a busy but lively atmosphere.

The menu boasts a variety of mouth-watering steamed buns. From braised pork and peanut powder to prawn with pickled mooli and spiced spring onion. Since opening, it seems they have added a few more buns to the menu to cater to non-meat eaters such as the braised tofu and butternut squash kimchi.

Spicy Edamame / Lychee Daiquiri £8.00

The snack style portions mean you can try quite a bit of what Mr Bao has to offer in one sitting. Per person, two or three buns and a couple of sharing plates such as; the sweet potato chips with wasabi mayo, the sesame spinach and spicy edamame is a filling amount.

The steamed bun fillings focus on Pan Asian flavours like the delicious Shiitake mushroom with teriyaki, miso mayo and crispy shallots, a mix of flavours work perfectly together. There is an open kitchen, so you can take a peek and see your buns being whipped up whilst sipping on a Taiwanese inspired cocktail...we tried one off the specials menu - the lychee daiquiri, which if you like lychees is delicious.

Most eves you will find Frank the owner (*gossip* he is married to the owner of Miss Tapas, the Spanish restaurant down the road) seating and serving customers. He is super friendly and passionate about all things steamed buns. It seems the guys work hard to support local Peckham businesses by sourcing ingredients locally as well as using local tradesmen to fix up the restaurant, which is pretty cool.
